Hyperthyroidism – homeopathic treatment by Dr. Tsan

Hyperthyroidism: thyroid dysfunction

Hyperthyroidism, aka Goiter, is a medical disorder that results in excessive production of the thyroxine hormone by the thyroid Hyperthyroidismgland. Hyperthyroidism significantly increases the system’s metabolism, triggering unexpected weight loss, tachycardia, arrhythmia, perspiring, and emotional unsteadiness.

Western physicians offer numerous treatment alternatives for hyperthyroidism. The list of treatment options includes anti-thyroid pharmaceutical drugs, radioactive iodine that reduces the synthesis of thyroxine, as well as surgical intervention to remove a thyroid gland entirely or partially. Even though goiter can seriously impair some organs and systems, medical professionals may be able to treat and maintain it.

Hyperthyroidism manifests in the form of enlargement and overfunctioning of the thyroid gland.

There are a variety of aspects that trigger thyroid dysfunction, including:

  • Iodine deficiency in food and water (often due to geographical location)
  • Excessive intake of ingredients that neutralize iodine. These ingredients include soy, cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower.
  • Intakes of certain pharmaceutical drugs (lithium and phenylbutazone) that increase the production of thyroxine
  • Thyroid cancer.
  • Cysts and knots are developing in the thyroid gland.

Etiology and Pathogenesis of Goiter

The term “hyperthyroidism refers to overfunctioning of the thyroid gland. In the majority of cases, goiter develops as a result of Graves’ syndrome, the disease that stimulates the immune system to create antibodies similar to TSH. These antibodies uncontrollably force the thyroid gland to produce an excessive thyroxine concentration. The gland responds by producing an excessive amount of hormones.

The major symptoms of goiter are:

  • Exophthalmia;
  • Tachycardia;
  • Arrhythmia;
  • Agitation;
  • Weight loss;
  • Intolerance to high temperatures.

Homeopathic treatment for hyperthyroidism

A well-trained homeopath chooses the appropriate remedies and dilutions for hyperthyroidism treatment based on a “like cures like” philosophy and the constitutional properties of homeopathic medicines. Below is the list of homeopathic remedies most commonly used for goiter.

Calcarea carbonica. [Calc]
In simple forms of hyperthyroidism, Calcarea carbonica has been used successfully. In homeopathic publications, Calcarea carbonica is found more often than any other remedy, especially in successful cases when patients were completely cured. According to research by German doctor Zopfy, this medication effectively treats simple forms of goiter in their early stages within a few weeks. Different practitioners recommend different dilutions; however, I prefer 1M in my clinic if the disease was diagnosed more than six months ago. I prescribe Calcarea carbonica only to patients who are puffy and overweight, have a big head, have cravings for eggs, and have severe reactions to milk products.

Lapis albus. [Lap-a]
This remedy is prepared from calcium silico-fluoride. Ten years later, Doctor Hale emphasized what Professor Grauvogel had initially recommended. Calcium silico-fluoride is an ingredient in the water of valleys where, traditionally, hyperthyroidism is widespread. I prescribe Lapis albus to anemic patients, which is helpful in the earlier stages of goiter.

Iodine. [Iod]
The most traditional medicine for hyperthyroidism is iodine. It covers most goiter symptoms, including a swollen gland, tachycardia, arrhythmia, tremor, and exophthalmia.

The generalized engrossment of lymphatic nodes all over the body, along with emotional depression, is a further indication of this remedy.

Fucus vesiculosus is made from sea kelp and contains a high iodine concentration. Thus, the focus is another traditional homeopathic remedy for hyperthyroidism.

Spongia tosta. [Spong]
This medicine is similar to Fucus vesiculosus because it’s made from natural Sponge, which is rich in Iodine. In the valleys where hyperthyroidism thrives, the population uses a powder made from oyster shells (Calcarea carbonica), sponge, and sugar. I prescribe Spongia only to patients with exophthalmia and cardiac symptoms (tachycardia, arrhythmia, etc.).

Thyroidine. [Thy]
This is probably remedy #1 for goiter. The symptoms that thyroidine covers are:

  • Diminished concentration of hemoglobin in the bloodstream;
  • Skinniness;
  • Perspiring;
  • Tenacious, stubborn frontal headaches
  • Muscular feebleness.
